Running from the light

I loved playing hide and go seek when I was young. All the kids on the block would gather right as the sun was going down for a challenging game of Hide and go seek. The block was the boundary. Alleys and backyards weren’t off limits. The only stipulation we put on were inside homes. Talk about hard. I hated being it because we did make a home base and people could sneak around you and touch base. One thing you knew to steer clear of; stay out of the light. Never run under the street lamp.

My kids took this hide and seek game one level up. They chose to wear black clothing, because in the dark of the night, light colors shine like the dawn, and you would be spotted from afar.

“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge and condemn the world [that is, to initiate the final judgment of the world], but that the world might be saved through Him. Whoever believes and has decided to trust in Him [as personal Savior and Lord] is not judged [for this one, there is no judgment, no rejection, no condemnation]; but the one who does not believe [and has decided to reject Him as personal Savior and Lord] is judged already [that one has been convicted and sentenced], because he has not believed and trusted in the name of the [One and] only begotten Son of God [the One who is truly unique, the only One of His kind, the One who alone can save him]. This is the judgment [that is, the cause for indictment, the test by which people are judged, the basis for the sentence]: the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For every wrongdoer hates the Light, and does not come to the Light [but shrinks from it] for fear that his [sinful, worthless] activities will be exposed and condemned. But whoever practices truth [and does what is right–morally, ethically, spiritually] comes to the Light, so that his works may be plainly shown to be what they are–accomplished in God [divinely prompted, done with God’s help, in dependence on Him].””

We run to the dark. I did as I played hide and seek. My kids did as they played hide and seek. The thing about running to the darkness. You get hurt. You don’t see curb and you fall and skin up your knees. You don’t see poles and you face plant into one and about break your nose. Are you wondering if I speak from experience? Maybe. Sometimes I look at world events and all I see are people playing hide and seek and running aimlessly in the dark. They are trying to race back to home base and the enemy keeps blocking their paths, but they won’t run to the light for fear of getting caught. The light is their enemy. They are afraid of condemnation if they come out into the light, so they shrink from it.

Boy do we have things all wrong. The light is our home base. The Light is Jesus. If we will just believe in Him, Jesus’ promises we will have no judgement, no rejection, and no condemnation. All that has been taken away. God sent His unique and only Son as our Light to illuminate our way home.

Are you afraid of the dark? Run to the Light.
