“The angel replied to her: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy One to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:35 HCSB
I would be remiss if I didn’t take a good look at the most prominent figure in the Christmas story. He is the leading character. He is more of a presence than either you or I. “The Holy Spirit will come upon you.” The Holy Spirit of God was the agent that came upon Mary and she became pregnant. The Holy Sprit of God was intricate in this Christmas magic. The Holy Spirit of God was intricate in the magic in creation of the entire world. Jesus is the Son of God. The Holy Spirit is the power of God. The Holy Spirit at work in our lives will always cause us to bring glory to the Son of God.
“Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.”
Genesis 1:2 HCSB
Jesus says of The Holy Spirit,
““When the Counselor comes, the One I will send to you from the Father — the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father — He will testify about Me.”
John 15:26 HCSB
How many times have we seen The Holy Spirit in action thus far in that first Christmas?
“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped inside her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Luke 1:41 HCSB
“Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:”
Luke 1:67 HCSB
Today I have no words to describe God’s Holy Spirit. There are no words of description at least none that God has not already given us in His Word. I did a word search of Holy Spirit in the bible. I will list just a few, but the list goes on and on. I think today this 18th day of December, one week before Christmas, I will reflect on the gift Jesus sent us after He ascended to sit on the right hand side of the Throne of God.
I present to you the Promised gift of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus tells the disciples before His departure to wait for the power of the Holy Spirit:
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:” John 16:7-8
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””
Acts 1:8 HCSB
“On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.”
Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4 NLT
“Now the one who has fashioned us for this very purpose is God, who has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.”
2 Corinthians 5:5 NIV
“While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.”
Acts 10:44 NIV
“for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what you should say.””
Luke 12:12 NIV
I could go on and on with verse after verse of how the Holy Spirit of God manifests in our lives. We cannot do this Christian life without the Spirit of God alive and active in our lives. The evidence of God’s Spirit in our lives is if our lives always bring Glory to the Son of God. The Holy Spirit of God will always implant Jesus into our hearts just as he planted Jesus into Mary’s womb.
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me,” even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
Psalm 139:7-12 NIV
